Reuse, Recycle and Recover for sustainable waste minimisation
The City of Johannesburg (COJ), EISD through the Waste Management and Regulations Unit aim to implement sustainable waste minimisation, reuse, recycling and recovery programmes through strategic interventions. These include promotion of Alternative Waste Treatment Technology (composting, waste-to-energy) and other recycling initiatives supported by the introduction of waste separation at source programmes.
These programmes are meant to uplift the people of the City of Johannesburg by enhancing the quality of life as well as provide the much needed jobs through the Integrated Waste Management Policy and Plan, which is designed to waste diversion from landfill sites.
City’s approach to changing course is informed by the GDS 2040 paradigm, which responds to the global, national and regional challenges of climate change, resource constraints, the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment, and inequality, as well as improving the overall governance and compliance environment. This paradigm shift requires the City to focus on activities that will promote waste minimisation and lead to waste being diverted away from landfill sites.
